Why Is the Vatican Suddenly Talking About Artificial Intelligence?

Since the beginning of the 21st Century, Artificial Intelligence has instantaneously become one of the, if not the most discussed technology related topics in the world. From students using a series of AI applications for doing their homeworks to governments debating in International stages on whether deepfakes and autonomous weapons should be allowed, AI is no longer a distant concept from science fiction films but an everyday tool. However, recently a new voice has entered the Global stage upon the topic of Artificial Intelligence with a distinct perspective, the Vatican City.

In recent weeks, Pope Leo XIV and Vatican officials have raised several concerns about the ethical consequences of artificial intelligence, stating the technology as a danger that can affect human dignity, truth and global peace efforts. While the concern is seen as a valid perspective by many governmental authorities, a question was raised within individuals that: Why is one of the world’s oldest institutions suddenly involving itself in humanity’s newest technological improvements? Why now but not in the reign of Pope Francis?

In order to address many initial public opinions, the Vatican has stated that its concerns are not entirely the technology itself, but how humans choose to use that technology. It was demonstrated by many Tech companies that Artificial Intelligence already has the ability to generate realistic fake videos, counterfeit documents, manipulate online information, replace individuals’ jobs and even influence political decisions. As the artificial intelligence technology is getting more advanced every single day, many individuals fear that society may begin to prioritize efficiency over humanity. Upon this perspective, the Vatican Church has also argued that technological progress without moral and ethical responsibility could evolve into a much more dangerous tool which can cause many future problems.

One of the main concerns of the Vatican Church is the loss of authentic human interactions. AI companions, virtual friendships and emotionally responsive chatbots are becoming increasingly popular in the younger generation. Many members of the Church believe that while these artificial systems may be seen as a helpful tool, they could also slowly replace real human interactions. The Church believes that human relationships and emotional understanding can not be replaced by algorithms and as such technologies.

One of the other main issues related to Artificial Intelligence is misinformation. As Artificial Intelligence is getting better and better every single day, Deepfake videos and AI-generated images have made it increasingly hard to distinguish human made content from AI made content. As information can spread instantaneously in our current time, false content and information may influence elections, damage individuals or political parties reputations and intensify global politics.

At the same time, some people question whether religious institutions such as the Vatican Church should influence perspectives upon modern technological improvements. Critics believe that AI regulations should be led by scientists, governments, and Tech-Companies rather than the Catholic Church while others believe that moral and philosophical perspectives must be taken into consideration with the assistance of the Catholic Church.

The contrast between the Vatican City and Silicon Valley is one of the most interesting points of this debate as well. While one side represents the centuries of tradition and moral teachings, the other side is the representative of innovation and technology. Yet both sides are discussing the same issue: What kind of future will Artificial Intelligence create and what will its effects be?

In conclusion, the presence of Vatican City in the debate upon artificial intelligence shows us a growing global concern about the relationship between technology and humanity. Artificial intelligence is no longer a tool for individuals’ daily usage but a force capable of changing communications, human relationships and shaping politics. As Pope Francis states in one of his speeches during his reign, “Technology is born for a purpose and, in its impact on human society, always represents a form of order in social relations, and an arrangement of power.”
